Let’s get joint injections back on the MBS

Late last year, joint injections and aspirations (MBS Items 50124/5) were deleted off the Medicare Benefit Schedule (MBS), the list of procedures and doctor’s visits (items) which are reimbursable from Medicare. This has pushed their costs up out of reach for many people.

“This is one of the most breathtakingly near-sighted decisions I’ve seen in many years from a government,” says Dr Lou McGuigan, a specialist in joint diseases and Vice-President of the Australian Rheumatology Association. “This is a Budget measure – made without consultation – and by people who had no understanding of the technical aspects of the joint injections.”

Arthritis Australia, along with the Australian Rheumatology Association, has been steadfastly campaigning to reinstate subsidized injections for people with arthritis, but they could use your support. By writing a letter to your local federal representative and health minister, you can let Canberra know the implications of removing this item. Let’s get joint injections back on the MBS. It’s an important treatment that brings relief to many which should not be denied to some because of cost.
