Community Osteoporosis Risk Assessment Service
Osteoporosis WA is committed to the prevention of osteoporotic fractures. A key component to prevention and treatment of osteoporosis is the early identification of people at risk of the disease, together with the education of lifestyle changes and diet.
In 2003/2004 Osteoporosis WA piloted an awareness programme at a limited number of Perth pharmacies to detect individuals at risk of osteoporosis. The positive response indicated the potential to expand the program at pharmacies in both metropolitan and regional areas.
The service offered by Osteoporosis WA includes a risk factor assessment and heel ultrasound. The heel ultrasound bone densitometer provides an indication of bone quality and correlates well with bone density of the hip. Those with low scores are advised to consult with their GP for further investigation as the service does not diagnose osteoporosis. All people, regardless of their level of risk, receive information that will assist in maintaining their bone health throughout their life-span.
The service takes no more than 15-20 minutes, and is operated by experienced allied health and nursing staff. No referral is required and the assessment is not necessary for those already diagnosed with osteoporosis.
Usual costs for this type of service are $50-60. As a not for profit organization, Osteoporosis WA offers the assessment service at the reduced cost of $30.00 ($25.00 concession).
