Our Committment to Research

Arthritis & Osteoporosis WA have been dedicated in the support and success of research into possible cures and better treatments for musculoskeletal diseases in Western Australia.

Research plays an important role in discovering new treatments, and making sure that existing treatments and services are being used in the best possible ways. Research can find answers to things that are unknown, filling gaps in knowledge and changing the way that healthcare professionals work.

Nearly four million Australians are living with arthritis and people are more likely to develop arthritis than just about any other chronic condition. Although arthritis is often considered an older person’s disease, the condition in its many forms affects people of all ages including children, adolescents and young adults.

Establishing the Chair of Rheumatology & Musculoskeletal Medicine at UWA

Arthritis & Osteoporosis WA were the major force behind the establishment of the Chair of Rheumatology & Musculoskeletal Medicine position. The inaugural appointment was accepted by Winthrop Professor Johannes Nossent in 2014.

Since his appointment as the Chair of Rheumatology and Musculoskeletal Medicine at the University of Western Australia, Professor Nossent has established a number of research programs locally, state-wide and nationally.

These research programs include a number of collaborations across various groups and institutions including: The University of Western Australia’s School of Population Health, the Busselton Population Medical Research Institute, Sir Charles Gairdner & Osborne Park Hospital Group, the Lupus Group of WA, the WA Lupus Working Party, Linear Clinical Research, WA Health Data Linkage Branch and the Australian Lupus Registry.
