This program is led by a physiotherapist and is specifically for people who have been diagnosed with osteoporosis or who have experienced a “first low trauma” fracture.
Osteoporosis is a condition characterised by the loss of calcium and other minerals from the bones. This results in the bone becoming more porous and susceptible to fractures.
Exercise plays a vital role in maintaining bone health because progressive weight-bearing, resistance exercise helps to stimulate new bone growth. Exercise can also maintain muscle strength, mobility, flexibility and balance. Improving balance and strength reduces the risk of falls and fractures which will result in a substantially improved quality of life.
Osteoporosis requires very specific kinds of exercise. These include resistance exercises such as lifting weights and climbing stairs, high impact exercises such as heel-drops and jumps, aerobic exercises such as brisk walking and cycling, and balance exercises.
Arthritis & Osteoporosis WA runs exercise classes specifically designed for people with osteoporosis. The classes cater for people with all levels of mobility including those with more complex medical conditions who may not be able to exercise in a regular gym. The classes are conducted by physiotherapists, and include information about different aspects of the condition.

- answer ‘No’ to all 6 questions (numbered 1 – 6) OR
- you MUST gain clearance from your GP/medical specialist PRIOR to participation in exercise if you have answered ‘Yes’ to one or more of the questions numbered 1 – 6.
