SUMMARY:Tai Chi for Arthritis and Osteoporosis (Beginner Level 2) - Sundays 11:00am Shenton Park
DESCRIPTION:Term 4: Mon 12 October – Sun 13 December 2026 (9 weeks)\nClass Details:\nThe Tai Chi for Arthritis Program instructed at AOWA was developed in 1997 by Dr Paul Lam in collaboration with Tai Chi and medical experts. It is specifically designed for people with arthritis and related musculoskeletal conditions\, using gentle\, flowing movements to improve strength\, mobility\, and overall wellbeing. Classes are delivered in a relaxed and social setting\, making them both enjoyable and accessible to people of all fitness levels.  \nResearch shows that Tai Chi helps build muscular strength to support and protect the joints\, increases flexibility and mobility to reduce stiffness and pain\, and improves balance by focusing on safe weight transference. These benefits reduce the risk of falls and support greater independence. Regular practice has also been linked to improved cardiorespiratory fitness\, enhancing the healthy functioning of the heart and lungs.  \nThe program combines movement with breathing and relaxation techniques\, helping participants relieve pain\, manage stress\, and improve posture. By bringing together physical\, mental\, and social benefits\, Tai Chi for Arthritis supports participants to feel stronger\, calmer\, and more confident in their everyday lives.  \nThe beginner-level 2 course builds on and refines the movements learned previously to start putting movements and sequences together. With a focus on mindfulness\, participants will improve and grow their skills\, learning to move muscles slowly and continuously. Participants will ideally have had some exposure to Tai Chi in the past\, but this is not a prerequisite. \n\nVenue: Seminar Room\, Wyllie Arthritis Centre\, 17 Lemnos Street\, Shenton Park.\nCost: Please see ticket details below to view term class fees.\nClass Times: You may only attend the day and time allocated for this class (once per week) \n*Please wear loose\, comfortable clothing and flat-soled shoes and bring a water bottle. \nMeet the Trainer:\nTeresa Stokes is a senior trainer and certified instructor with Dr Paul Lam’s Tai Chi for Health Institute. Teresa Stokes has been practising Tai Chi for 16 years and has shared her practice with Arthritis and Osteoporosis WA for the past 10 years. She enjoys learning\, practising\, and sharing Tai Chi with her children\, grandchildren\, and participants who want to improve their health physically\, mentally\, and socially. \nShe believes that Tai Chi has had a positive impact on both her daily life and her overall health and capabilities. Teresa is an experienced instructor skilled at modifying movements to suit individuals. \nChairs are available for support\, and the program can be performed seated if preferred.\nTeresa looks forward to meeting new participants and watching them grow and feel their best. \nRegistration Details:\n– Online registrations will close at 4pm\, one business day before the term start date for each class (i.e. online bookings for Sunday classes close 4pm on Friday 16th October).\n– If you are interested in joining after online registration closes\, please get in touch with our staff at 9388 2199 to assist with your request\, \nTo successfully complete registration\, you must either:\n– Answer ‘No’ to all six questions (numbered 1 – 6) OR\n– Gain clearance from your GP/medical specialist PRIOR to participation in the exercise if you have answered ‘Yes’ to one or more of the questions numbered 1 – 6\n– Agree to the *Terms & Conditions outlined below. \nClick here to read our Term-Based Exercise Terms & Conditions.

SUMMARY:Teens Healthy Bones and Joints Program (Secondary School) - Thursdays 4:00pm\, Shenton Park
DESCRIPTION:Term 4: Mon 12 October – Sun 13 December 2026 (9 weeks)\nNote: Teens Healthy Bones & Joints classes will run from 22 Oct – 10 Dec. Registration fee is for 8 weeks.\nClass Details:\nThe Healthy Bones and Joints Program is a specialised group exercise program designed for secondary school students living with conditions such as Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI)\, Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA)\, and Connective Tissue Disorders. Developed in partnership with the endocrinology team at Perth Children’s Hospital and physiotherapists at Western Kids Health\, the program is supervised by a senior physiotherapist with specialist training in these conditions to ensure exercises are safe\, effective\, and tailored to individual needs.  \nResearch shows that staying active during puberty plays a vital role in building bone density and reducing the risk of fractures and injuries later in life. Regular exercise also helps manage pain\, fatigue\, and stiffness while improving participation in school\, family\, and social activities. However\, barriers such as fear of injury\, pain\, or uncertainty about safe exercise can make it difficult for teens with musculoskeletal conditions to stay active. This program addresses these challenges by providing expert guidance in a relaxed and supportive environment.  \nEach session includes a mix of flexibility\, strengthening\, aerobic conditioning\, and balance training\, all delivered in a graded format appropriate for teens with chronic musculoskeletal conditions. Beyond the physical benefits\, the program also creates an important opportunity for young people to connect\, support one another\, and share experiences\, building both resilience and confidence. \nTo successfully complete registration\, your teen must fulfill the below criteria:\n–   Children aged 12 years or older (year 7 and up)\n–   OI\, JIA\, CWPS\, HSD\, hEDS/cEDS diagnosis\n–   Clearance to exercise as provided by GP or Specialist\n–   ESSA Medical History form to be completed (contained within this online registration) \nVenue: Western Kids Health\, Level 1\, Victoria House\, 4 Thorburn Way\, Shenton Park\nCost: Please see ticket details below to view term class fees.\nClass Times: You may only attend the day and time allocated for this class (once per week) as indicated on the online booking confirmation email. \nRegistration Details:\n– Online registrations for Teens Healthy Bones & Joints classes will close at 10am on Thursday 22nd October.\n– If you are interested in joining after online registration closes\, please get in touch with our staff at 9388 2199 to assist with your request. \nTo successfully complete registration\, you must either:\n– Answer ‘No’ to all questions (numbered 1 – 10) OR\n– Gain clearance from your child’s GP/medical specialist PRIOR to participation in the exercise if you have answered ‘Yes’ to one or more of the questions numbered 1 – 10\n– Agree to the *Terms & Conditions outlined below. \nClick here to read our Term-Based Exercise Terms & Conditions.
