Tai Chi for Arthritis & Osteoporosis (Beginner Level 2) – Sundays 11:00am Shenton Park

Term 2: Mon 20th April – Sun 5th July 2026 (11 weeks)

Class Details:

The Tai Chi for Arthritis Program instructed at AOWA was developed in 1997 by Dr Paul Lam in collaboration with Tai Chi and medical experts. It is specifically designed for people with arthritis and related musculoskeletal conditions, using gentle, flowing movements to improve strength, mobility, and overall wellbeing. Classes are delivered in a relaxed and social setting, making them both enjoyable and accessible to people of all fitness levels.

Research shows that Tai Chi helps build muscular strength to support and protect the joints, increases flexibility and mobility to reduce stiffness and pain, and improves balance by focusing on safe weight transference. These benefits reduce the risk of falls and support greater independence. Regular practice has also been linked to improved cardiorespiratory fitness, enhancing the healthy functioning of the heart and lungs.

The program combines movement with breathing and relaxation techniques, helping participants relieve pain, manage stress, and improve posture. By bringing together physical, mental, and social benefits, Tai Chi for Arthritis supports participants to feel stronger, calmer, and more confident in their everyday lives.

The beginner-level 2 course builds on and refines the movements learned previously to start putting movements and sequences together. With a focus on mindfulness, participants will improve and grow their skills, learning to move muscles slowly and continuously. Participants will ideally have had some exposure to Tai Chi in the past, but this is not a prerequisite.
