Living with arthritis can significantly impact everyday activities, but the right guidance and support can make a real difference. The Thriving with Arthritis: Regional Education Expo is designed for anyone looking for practical strategies to manage their condition, connect with knowledgeable professionals, and take an active role in managing their health.

Presentations from health professionals will cover nutrition, exercise, pain and available support services, highlighting positive lifestyle changes that can significantly improve your wellbeing and support effective disease management.

Attendees will have the opportunity to:
  • Discover practical, evidence-based strategies to manage arthritis effectively
  • Take part in a moderated Q&A with guest speakers
  • Access information resources from Arthritis & Osteoporosis WA
  • Learn about local support resources and programs
  • Connect with others in the community who are managing arthritis conditions

With around 100 conditions that fall under the umbrella of arthritis, this event is open to anyone affected by an arthritis condition, including individuals diagnosed with arthritis, carers, and those interested in learning more about effective self-management strategies.

  • Nourish Your Joints: A Self-Management Guide for ArthritisDr Emily Calton (Dietitian)

Dr Emily Calton is an Accredited Practising Dietitian, Nutritionist and Accredited Sports Dietitian with a PhD in Public Health. Emily is a senior lecturer and researcher at Curtin University and coordinates nutrition-related research at Fiona Stanley Hospital, Fremantle Hospital and Cockburn Health. She teaches the latest advances in nutrition including evaluation of emerging diet trends such as intermittent fasting.  Her research interests include investigating the impact of diet on inflammation, metabolism, body composition, and surgical outcomes. Through her telehealth practice The Nutrition Doctor, she supports clients around Australia to make changes to their diets to improve their diet and manage health conditions such as arthritis, osteoporosis, weight-loss, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and fatty liver.  Emily has been an invited presenter to deliver workshops and seminars to health professional bodies, not for profit organisations and WA Government Departments. Supporting the many health education activities of AOWA, she has written magazine articles on the role of diet, presented to young adults living with arthritis at The Arthritis Getaway, presented at the National Consumer Conference, and delivered education for GPs, exercise physiologists, physiotherapists and nurses on the role of diet for osteoarthritis.

  • Taking Control of Pain: Self-Managing Your Way to Better LivingMel Galbraith (Physiotherapist)

Melanie graduated from Curtin University in 1994 and has been working as a physiotherapist for the past 30 years, including 10 years in the UK. Mel’s own experience with persistent pain led her to complete a Master of Science in Medicine – Pain Management via the University of Sydney, and she has focused on this area for the latter half of her career. Mel has been connected to the Arthritis Foundation for over 10 years, providing consumer and health professional education on pain management and exercise.

  • Guest Speaker Panel Q&A

Following the main presentations, all speakers come together for a short moderated session to revisit key topics, respond to audience questions, and share additional insights and practical tips.
