HBF Run For a Reason

This annual event attracted 13 766 excited runners waiting to start 2011's HBF Run for a Reason at the WACA. And it was well worth the wait as the masses surged through the streets and freeways of Perth with cheerleaders, drums and trumpets greeting them with fanfare at various points along the way.

Arthritis & Osteoporosis WA was once again one of the beneficiary charities of the HBF Run for a Reason. In 2011 we received wonderful support with over 100 runners fundraising for us and many more donations coming through with registrations. Peta Hulbert was in the Top Ten Fundraisers as an individual – raising over $ 2 300. We also had 3 teams in the Top Ten spots The Heartthrobs who raised over $2 370, Team Jessie with over $1 500 and The Stooges with over $1 200. We had many more committed teams and individuals who went above and beyond with their fundraising efforts and their support is incredibly valued by everyone here at Arthritis & Osteoporosis WA.

The organisers from HBF did a wonderful job in ensuring that every detail was looked after in this event and Arthritis & Osteoporosis WA would like to thank them for all their efforts – in particular, Lousie Bolt, Kiersten Crowe and Amy Baddock. As a smaller organisation, we appreciate the opportunity to benefit from such a large scale event.

We had over 30 volunteers helping on the day on behalf of Arthritis & Osteoporosis WA in roles varying from water stations, to start line attendants and manning our charity stand. The Sambanistas were once again a magnificent hit as the entertainment representing us, with many runners commenting on how energising the drumming was. Many thanks to Yvonne Draydon and the Sambanistas, and all our amazing volunteers!

Our director, Ric Forlano, managed to shave an hour off his time record from last year in the 14km event and all his staff would like to congratulate him on his efforts! All in all, it was a great event with a fundraising total of over $22 000! We hope to see everyone again in 2012 and have the ‘skeleton runners’ out in force once more.

Abbotts Solutions Arthritis Golf Classic

On November 18th, 2011, the annual Abbott Solutions Arthritis Golf Classic was held at the prestigious Araluen Golf Resort. This is Arthritis & Osteoporosis WA’s flagship fund raising and networking event and was attended by Perth’s leaders in business. Proceeds helped Arthritis & Osteoporosis WA support West Australians with bone and joint disease with programs in care, education and research.

Art Show

The 2011 Art for Arthritis exhibition was once again a huge success! Through the dedicated efforts of volunteers like Ellie Steinhardt, Jenny Gorman and Sara Ladyman, over 260 works of art were exhibited. This year’s collection featured jewellery pieces, exquisite bags woven from silver and handmade teddy bears.

The opening night was very well attended and many paintings sold within minutes of the doors opening. Live folk music was provided by James Buchanan and the event was catered by Executive Chef, Haedyn Woollaston. A n exquisite range of bio-dynamic wines was provided by Marriwood Park, who very kindly gave away a 2 night vinestay at the vineyard in Yallingup as a door prize.

Mrs Rhonda Wyllie was our guest speaker for the evening and opened the exhibition with the announcement of the winner of the Dr Evan Owen award.
The paintings exhibited this year included a phenomenal range of styles and media but, it was agreed, that all were of a superb level of craftsmanship and our guest judges had a difficult time choosing the winner of the Dr Evan Owen award.

The following artists received a Highly Commended:
Beba Hall with View to an Outer Dream
Lyn Franke with Red Landscape with Snappy Gums
Barbara Butler with The Historic Camelot Outdoor Cinema
Carolyn Ryall with Garlic Love
Helen Almond with Gazing and Grazing
And the winner of the Dr Evan Owen Award was
John Stribling with Decree Nisi: Celebration & Reflection

Arthritis & Osteoporosis WA would like to thank all the volunteers and artists who contributed to the exhibition and to everyone who came along and made the event such a success!
