Staying Moving, Staying Stronger (SMSS)

This project is also funded by the Australian Government and aims to develop consumer resources for Aboriginal Australians living with arthritis. The overall principle underpinning this project is cultural security with the main objective being to develop and deliver culturally appropriate arthritis information resources that are informed by and incorporate the cultural rights, values, beliefs, knowledge systems and expectations of Aboriginal people.

Arthritis & Osteoporosis WA (AOWA) have partnered with the following organisations for this project:

  • National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (NACCHO).
  • University of Melbourne (UMelb).
  • University of Western Australia (UWA).
  • Curtin University (WA).

In 2021, the following key project outputs were successfully achieved:

  • Completion of 25 interviews with Aboriginal Australians living with arthritis.
  • Convening of the Expert Advisory Group.
  • Submission of the research protocol to a peer reviewed health journal.
  • Completion of a clinical practice guideline review process.

The next phase will occur early in 2022 and will see the development of recommendations to inform development of the resources. The resources will be created towards the end of 2022.
