Beyond the Pain: Finding Freedom and Community

How Arthritis WA is Transforming Lives

For many, arthritis isn’t just about achy joints or a sore back; it’s about the small, daily losses that add up over time. It’s the quiet grief of saying no to a family outing, the frustration of being too tired to catch up with friends, and the loneliness of feeling like no one truly understands.

These are the stories we hear every day at Arthritis & Osteoporosis WA. People walk through our doors feeling isolated, their worlds shrinking with every painful step. They’ve let go of hobbies they loved and are constantly trying to explain why they’re not “okay.” They’re exhausted, not just physically, but emotionally.

But what they find here isn’t just a program—it’s a lifeline. It’s a place where the pain that feels isolating becomes a shared experience, and where support systems, new friendships, and a sense of belonging flourish.

More Than a Movement Class

Our programs are designed to do more than simply manage physical symptoms. They’re built to restore a sense of self and community.

Take our hydrotherapy pool, for example. For people like Robert, who found that even walking his dog had become too painful, the water offers a sanctuary. “In the water, I can move freely without hurting,” he says. “That freedom keeps me going.” It’s a simple sentiment, but it speaks to the profound relief of rediscovering movement without pain.

And it’s not just the water. Our movement classes—from gentle yoga to specialised exercise programs—are a cornerstone of what we do. Janet, a regular participant, told us in a recent survey that she believes without her yoga class, she “would become more disabled in body and spirit.” This highlights how our programs are truly holistic, addressing not just the physical toll of arthritis but the mental and emotional one as well.

These classes also foster social connections that combat the isolation so many people feel. Our little cafe, a hub of post-class conversation, is just as important as the classes themselves. It’s where people share stories, exchange tips, and build a community. As Juanita so eloquently put it, “Social interaction keeps me young. These classes help with my pain and stiffness and my mental health.”

A Beacon of Hope in a Busy World

In a healthcare system that can be overwhelming and overstretched, Arthritis & Osteoporosis WA serves as a crucial resource. We see countless people who have waited months, sometimes years, for answers, and they arrive at our doors feeling unheard. Our Consumer Support Helpline and resource library provide a source of comfort and guidance, a place where people can finally get the support they need.

Our services are more in demand than ever. Each week, we welcome new faces—people who are unsure of what to do next and are looking for a place to start their journey toward a better life.

Beyond our direct services, we are committed to looking to the future. A portion of every donation helps advance vital WA-based research into new treatments and, one day, maybe even a cure. We are deeply committed to fiscal responsibility, ensuring that every dollar you donate goes as far as possible.

Our Executive Director, Ric Forlano, often says, “Our frugality is legendary,” and it’s a promise we live by. We waste nothing, ensuring your support directly helps those who need it most.

Your Role in the Story

This incredible work is only possible with the generosity of our community. Every gift, no matter the size, makes a tangible difference. It keeps our hydrotherapy pool maintained, our movement classes running, and our Consumer Support Helpline open. It helps a young person struggling with juvenile arthritis feel less alone, and it gives an older person the freedom to walk their dog again.

It helps us keep our doors open for people like Janet, Robert, and Juanita, and for all the new faces we see every week.

We believe that no one should have to navigate the world of arthritis alone. Our mission is to provide not just physical relief but also understanding, hope, and a community where everyone feels understood.
